Let’s be honest—leadership isn’t a destination; it’s a process. No matter how many years you’ve been in the game, there are subtle warning signs that can creep into your leadership style without you even realizing it.

Left unchecked, these red flags don’t just erode culture and performance—they undermine your credibility.

Over the years, I’ve helped many leaders overcome their blind spots and there are some common culprits. Here are five important leadership ‘red flags’ worth checking yourself for, before someone else does.

1. You’re Always the Smartest Person in the Room

If you never feel challenged, questioned, or surprised by your team, there’s a problem. Either you’ve hired people who are afraid to speak up—or you’ve built an environment where they’d rather not. A strong leader surrounds themselves with thinkers and questioners, not followers. If no one’s pushing back, you’re not leading a team—you’re managing silence.

2. You Prioritize Results Over Relationships—Every Time

Yes, performance matters. But if the “how” is constantly sacrificed for the “what,” burnout, resentment, and turnover are right around the corner. High performance is sustainable only when people feel seen, heard, and valued. If your team’s success comes with a body count, it’s time to reassess.

3. You Avoid Difficult Conversations

You’d be surprised how many senior leaders still dodge the tough talks. Whether it’s avoiding giving feedback, delaying accountability, or sugar-coating hard truths, this one quietly kills trust. A good leader doesn’t relish conflict—but they don’t run from it either. Clarity is kind. Silence isn’t.

4. You’re the Bottleneck—and Don’t Realize It

If your team constantly waits on your input to move forward, that’s a red flag—especially if you’re unaware it’s happening. Micromanagement isn't always about control; sometimes, it’s about insecurity masked as perfectionism. Empower your people. If you have to be in every room to make progress, you haven’t built a scalable team—you’ve built a dependency.

5. You Stop Learning

This one’s subtle. You’re experienced, you’ve succeeded, and people look to you for answers. But when was the last time you changed your mind on something big? Or admitted you were wrong? Or actively sought out a new perspective that made you uncomfortable? Great leaders stay curious and teachable. The minute you think you’ve mastered the game, the game changes.

The Bottom Line

Red flags aren’t career-ending—they’re course-correcting. Spotting them early is a strength, not a weakness. Because in leadership, self-awareness isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s a survival skill.

So take a minute to check how people are responding to you. Clues about your blind spots often lie in what they don't say.

If you’ve spotted any potential blind spots in your leadership, let’s talk. Blind spots result in behaviours that negatively impact your leadership effectiveness and career progression. We are usually unaware of them, but there will be clues.

And thankfully,  uncovering and addressing your blind spots is not as hard as you may think.
